Owen Bernice Smith, Jr., 48 years old, from Rocky Mount, NC, passed on November 19, 2007 after his fight with Pancreatic Cancer. He was informed of this diagnosis on March 22, 2007.

Owen and his wife Berrie, have 3 children-- Owen, now 20, Olivia, now 18, and Bethany, now 16. He enjoys hunting, boating, fishing, golf and spending time with his family. He was a 1978 graduate of Rocky Mount Senior High and attended NC State University. He has previously worked at Consolidated Diesel, Kioti Tractor, and was most recently  employed at Hines Equipment Company in Rocky Mount.

Owen and Berrie endured the most challenging times of their lives during the past few months prior to Nov. 19, 2007, yet at the same time received so many blessings, in so many ways, from family and friends. We hope that this website will be a communication tool for those who are interested in Owen's fight, and who care and have prayed for him and his family. They want to convey their deep appreciation for every single prayer, and all the known and unknown acts of support and love that are still evident every day.

We also hope that this website will help increase awareness about pancreatic cancer. It is indeed a dreadful cancer. About 39,000 people are diagnosed in the US each year, with very dismal survival statistics. We hope to share the latest information, options and alternatives available to help others walking down the same road.

Thank you from the Smith's for all your help, caring, and love.
- Susan (Smith) Lewis

A quote I found online from another pancreatic cancer patient on staying positive: “Hope is one of the most important feelings, if you give it up, you might as well give up on yourself.” Owen and Berrie have adopted the simple “I’m not going down without a fight” attitude. They draw on faith in God, and know that it is through Him that miracles are given to us, and by Him, it is part of His plan.
