Dear Neighbors and Friends of Owen Smith,
Please join us in a neighborly quest to support Owen Smith and his family in his fight against cancer. Owen Smith, 48 years old, is living with pancreatic cancer. He was informed of this diagnosis on March 22, 2007. Owen and his wife Berrie, have 3 children -- Owen, 19, Olivia, 16, and Bethany, 14. He enjoys hunting, boating, fishing, golf and spending time with his family. He is a 1978 graduate of Rocky Mount Senior High and attended NC State University. He has previously worked at Consolidated Diesel, Kioti Tractor, and is currently employed at Hines Equipment Company in Rocky Mount.
Owen and his family have not only struggled to fight this cancer physically and mentally, but they have had many financial challenges, as well. Numerous medical bills, which as we all know are not completely covered by insurance, have mounted up. In addition to the traditional treatments, they have chosen to fight with alternative medicine, which is not covered by health insurance and includes numerous expenses for the devices (like the water purification system), and monthly costs of the supplements, vitamins, special enzymes, etc. and buying organic foods. These are just part of the added financial burden their family has undertaken.
As their neighbors and friends we want to help in every way we can. We will be holding a Multi-Family Yard Sale to support his fund-raising campaign, “Owen’s Fight Fund” which was created to support Owen’s recovery efforts.

RE: “F.O.O. Fighters for Owen”

We are writing to ask for help as we try to help Owen Smith. Owen is special to us because he is our friend/brother. As you may know, Owen was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in March of this year. We have watched and prayed for Owen and his family as he has fought this disease. Soon after his diagnoses, Owen underwent a regimen of chemotherapy. Since then, he has undergone experimental treatment with the help of renowned Doctor Nicolas Gonzalez.
As you can imagine, the cost of Owen’s conventional treatment was only partly covered by health insurance and the alternative treatment is not covered at all. In addition to these therapies, we have witnessed Owen:
· purchase a Reverse Osmosis Water Purifying System (bottled water is not pure enough for Owen as he undergoes treatment)
· purchase special vitamins, supplements and enzymes (During a 20 day period this summer, Owen was taking 191 pills a day)
· purchase special organic foods and other products
There is a possibility that Owen will be going to the Integrative Medical Center of New Mexico later this fall for 2 weeks for an additional treatment (to complement the Gonzalez Regimen he is on now), the cost of which will also not be covered by insurance. The cost of treatments, travel, hotel, car, and meal expenses will be significant. (More information can be found by visiting www.owensfight.com). Also, a gap and decrease in his family’s normal income is expected as he transitions to receive disability income.
We want Owen to focus on beating this disease without being distracted by the financial consequences of the therapy. Therefore, we have formed a small group to help…. we call ourselves the “F.O.O. Fighters” (Friends Of Owen) and we’d like for you to join.
We have established a goal of $10,000 and ask that you please consider donating $25, $50, $100 or more to this cause. We have secured a few donated items and we will ‘draw names’ to determine the winners of these items. From our $25 donors, we will draw for a Carolina Hurricanes ‘signed’ Jersey (2007/2008 team). From our $50 donors we will draw two names of which each will receive a Turkey Fryer, and from our $100 donors will draw for a Flat Screen TV. We will ‘draw’ these names on December 15th 2007. Whether you are able to provide financial assistance or not, your prayers are coveted… your reward will surely be greater than anything we will give away.
To celebrate what we hope to be a successful campaign, we will hold an “Appreciation Get-Together” at the Stillwater Hunt Club in Enfield, NC on Nov. 3rd from 3 pm to 6 pm. Owen will be there, so please come by and say Hi.
Please use the attached card to let us know a little information (so that we can put you in the drawing), place it in the self-addressed stamped envelope and insert your check in it as well. Every dollar will be given to Owen to help him pay for his treatments and expenses resulting from his situation.
